Cool! May I make a recommendation? “The Price” in season 2. Xena’s Tower and Well are on full display here (though in my opinion the writers’ choice to show her “good” and “dark” sides as discrete parts of her personality misses a chance to display some human richness and complexity of character). Also, Gabrielle (the sidekick)’s story arc in the episode proves that you don’t need to put a sword in a woman’s hands to make her strong.

But if you were writing Princess Leia today, she’d be much more of a driver. She starts things out by asking for help, and getting the interest of Hero Boy. And her function is the story is in relation to the interest Hero Boy and Cool Hero Guy feel for her. Nowadays, she’d have her own plan and plot line, and probably do as much rescuing as being rescued.

I love the Well and Tower theory. Hadn’t heard of it before, but I’m going to be looking at a lot of stories a little differently from now on. Thanks!

As for Buffy being a game-changer…sure she was, but what about Xena? I know, I know, she ran around in leather underwear – but she had both the Tower (she was a take-charge leader and kicked serious butt) and the Well (her tendency to want to “kill ‘em all!”). I don’t remember if she squeaked, but I do remember she had a ululating battle-cry (“ah-lalalalala!”), and a deliciously evil cackle at times.

Good point Maz – and I did like Carrie more and more as the season went on, especially the final 2 episodes. As for The Wire – that’s just an exercise in brilliant characterization!

I appreciate the character of Carrie on Homeland because it’s the type of character men usually get to play (Sherlock Holmes, Monk, McNulty from The Wire)–deeply flawed, but better at what they do than anyone else in the universe. Nurse Jackie is similar (both Showtime women!)

What about Princess Leia? She was awesome starting with the first movie, and by the third, even when reduced to wearing a little metal bikini, she strangled Jabba the Hut /spoiler
